The Guide to Table Linens for College & University Events
There’s no shortage of school spirit on campus. The colors are already iconic. The traditions have been around for decades. And the calendar is packed with reasons to celebrate them. From homecoming weekends and alumni dinners, to tailgates, Greek life events, commencement celebrations and donor galas, the college event circuit practically comes with its own dress code. And the tables should be in on it. And when it comes to elevating your tables and event design, we’ve got you covered.
Start with the palette, then play with it. Bring in a print or pattern. Mix and match linens across the room. Add a pop of school color with a napkin, layer a runner over a solid, or let one statement linen be the star. While layering your table with in solid school colors is a no-brainer, we live the approach of taking your school colors, mixing in patterns, and making the event a one-of-one.

Homecoming Looks Good in Color
Homecoming has all the ingredients of a great event before the first table is set: tradition, nostalgia, rivalry, and a guest list that spans generations. It’s also an excuse to have some fun with the school palette. Mix stripes with solids. Work a pattern into the cocktail tables. Layer in school colors through napkins, runners, or one standout table. Across alumni receptions, class reunions, welcome parties, pre-game celebrations, and post-game dinners, the same palette can take on a completely different personality from one event to the next.

Campus Events Call for Better Tables
From game day to Bid Day, college life comes with a pretty full social calendar. Tailgates have graduated from folding tables and plastic tablecloths to full-scale hospitality events with tents, bars, lounge seating, catering stations, and tablescapes that can hold their own beyond the stadium. Equally, Greek life brings its own lineup: recruitment, formals, Parents Weekend, philanthropy events, alumni dinners, Founders Day, and plenty more in between. School and chapter colors are an easy place to start, but they don’t have to dictate the whole design.
Mix a bold print into a lineup of solids. Add a runner to the buffet. Pull a school color into the napkins. Give the bar or cocktail tables their own pattern, and dress up lounge or seating areas with coordinating pillow picks. The same palette can feel playful for Bid Day, spirited for game day, polished for Parents Weekend, and completely dressed up for formal.

Graduation Deserves a Good Table
After four years (or five, we’re not judging) the celebration should look like one. Commencement weekends bring together department receptions, university celebrations, family dinners, graduation parties, and plenty of opportunities to put school colors back to work. Go all in or keep it subtle. Start with a school-colored linen and layer in a pattern. Keep the table understated and bring in color through the napkin. Add a runner for just enough contrast. Or mix several linens throughout the event so the palette feels cohesive without every table looking the same. The diploma may be the main event, but the table can still have its moment.

And Then There Are the Grown-Up Campus Events
Donor dinners. Presidential receptions. Fundraising galas. Board events. Faculty celebrations. University anniversaries. School colors still belong here, but take them up a notch with intentional linen choices. For more formal campus occasions, think beyond a the obvious single solid linen on every table. Layer in texture. Mix a print with quieter solids. Pull the school palette into napkins, runners, cocktail tables, or accent moments throughout the room. Even the most recognizable school colors can feel elevated when they’re mixed, layered, and used a little unexpectedly. The connection to the university is still there. It just doesn’t have to announce itself from across the ballroom.
